Thanks for all the hard work in 2024 — we have even more to do in 2025!

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Happy December! CCB had a wonderful October, November turned out to be the real spooky season, and we’re hoping that December and January are as uneventful as possible for the sake of our collective emotional health. In this newsletter we’re going to recap:

  • The premiere of our first ever video on middle-income Californians;

  • Our Dream Builders event in October;

  • Our co-hosted event with UnidosUS

Quick thoughts on the election

Before we get to the fun stuff, and now that I’ve had a month and change to think, I’d like to share some thoughts on the election. Lots of folks have written plenty already so if you want to just keep scrolling you won’t miss anything profound — just another non-profit leader working out his feelings via official newsletter.

The last time this president-elect won, I was 32 and just as surprised and horrified as everyone else. This time I’m 40 and the election results are still horrifying but not as big of a surprise. While I feel like our country will be ok and we’ll look back on this period as a profoundly-sad-but-temporary setback, that might just be because I don’t want to consider the alternative. Unfortunately, I don’t have a crystal ball and neither does anyone else.

As I’m sure everyone remembers, there’s an important scene in Rocky III where Rocky finally admits he’s afraid. Well dear reader, me too! The good thing though is that Rocky had Adrian to shake him out of it: “I’m afraid too, there’s nothing wrong with being afraid.” Rocky III is objectively silly, but it’s good feedback nonetheless.

CCB can’t change national politics — we have our hands full working on state-based housing issues that aren’t even particularly partisan — but what we can and will do is be a support for anyone who needs it. In 2025 and beyond, CCB will aim be an Adrian to all of the Rockeys out there that are fighting for what’s right. We know eventually it’ll be our turn to do something brave-but-scary, so we’ll need our own Adrians, too.

Have a wonderful holiday season and happy New Year!

Ok, heavy stuff aside. Before everyone heads out for the holiday break, we want to say a big thank you to all of our wonderful friends, partners, and colleagues for your amazing hard work in 2024. The CCB team hopes that everyone has a have a happy, healthy and safe holiday season. We’re excited and lucky to continue our work with you in 2025. See you in January!

World Premiere: Stories from the Missing Middle

In case you missed it, this past Tuesday we held the world premiere of our short film: Stories from the Missing Middle.  As a part of the release, we held a panel conversation and invited our good friends Elizabeth Hansburg of People for Housing Orange County, who co-produced the film; Vincent and Sofia Cortez  of Mitchell Street Pictures who directed the film; plus two of the main characters featured in the film, Mercedes Gibson (Mercedes Gibson Coaching) and Elisa De La Pena. Give it a watch!
